Your Google Business Profile is often the first impression potential customers have of your business. A fully optimized profile can dramatically increase your visibility in local search results, drive more phone calls, and bring more customers through your door.
In this guide, we'll cover every optimization opportunity available to you, from basic setup to advanced strategies that most businesses overlook.
Start With the Basics
Before diving into advanced optimizations, ensure your foundational information is accurate and complete. This includes your business name (exactly as it appears on your storefront or legal documents), address, phone number, website URL, and hours of operation.
Your business name should be your actual business name—not stuffed with keywords. Adding keywords to your business name violates Google's guidelines and can result in suspension. If your competitors are doing it, they're taking a risk that could backfire.
Choose the Right Categories
Category selection is one of the most important optimization decisions you'll make. Your primary category has the biggest impact on which searches you appear for, so choose carefully. Research what categories your top-ranking competitors are using, and select the most specific option that accurately describes your main business activity.
You can add up to 10 categories total, but don't add categories just for the sake of it. Only include secondary categories that genuinely apply to services you offer.
Write a Compelling Business Description
Your business description appears in the "From the business" section of your profile. You have 750 characters to describe what makes your business unique, what services you offer, and why customers should choose you.
Focus the first 250 characters on your most important information, as this is what shows before users click "More." Include relevant keywords naturally, but write for humans first. Mention your location, specialties, and any unique value propositions.
Add Products and Services
The Products and Services sections allow you to showcase what you offer with descriptions and prices. This not only helps customers understand your offerings but also gives Google more context about your business.
For each product or service, include a name, description (up to 1,000 characters), and price or price range. Use relevant keywords in your descriptions, and link to relevant pages on your website.
Upload High-Quality Photos
Visual content significantly impacts engagement with your listing. Businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks than those without.
Upload a variety of photo types: your logo, a cover photo, exterior shots (so customers can recognize your location), interior photos, team photos, and photos showing your work or products. Aim for at least 10-15 photos initially, and add new photos regularly to keep your profile fresh.
Photo quality matters. Use well-lit, high-resolution images that represent your business professionally. Avoid stock photos—authenticity builds trust.
Enable Messaging
Google Business Profile messaging allows customers to contact you directly through your listing. Enabling this feature gives customers another easy way to reach you and can increase leads. Just make sure you have a system to respond promptly—customers expect quick replies.
Use Google Posts
Google Posts are mini-updates that appear on your profile. You can share offers, announcements, events, and updates. Posts stay visible for 7 days (or until your event date passes), so create new posts regularly.
Include compelling images, clear calls-to-action, and links to relevant pages on your website. Posts don't directly impact rankings, but they can improve click-through rates and conversions.
Add Attributes
Attributes are additional details about your business like "Women-owned," "Free Wi-Fi," "Wheelchair accessible," or "Outdoor seating." The available attributes depend on your business category.
Review all available attributes and add every one that applies to your business. These help customers find businesses that meet their specific needs and can appear in filtered searches.
Manage Q&A
The Q&A section allows anyone to ask and answer questions about your business. Monitor this section regularly and answer questions promptly and thoroughly. You can also seed this section by posting (and answering) common questions yourself.
Keep Your Profile Updated
Optimization isn't a one-time task. Update your hours for holidays, add new photos regularly, create fresh Google Posts, and respond to new reviews promptly. An active, well-maintained profile signals to Google that your business is engaged and reliable.
